Our History

A hospital shaped by discipline, dedication and service.

St. Werburgh's Mission Hospital was established in 1930 by missionaries from SPG London. Before the hospital moved to its present place, care was run from the District bungalow, now associated with the School for the Blind.

The early story remembers Dr. DeTiel from Austria, a pioneer who worked tirelessly to develop the hospital by the 1950s, adapting herself to the local climate and simple Indian food. She was later joined by doctors including Dr. G. Azraiah, Dr. Vijaya and Dr. Ruth, who served poor patients from villages around Nandyal.

During 1956–57, Dr. Herbert David, an FRCS surgeon from Muthyalapadu, and his wife, a radiologist, strengthened surgical and diagnostic care. The hospital was known for separate wards, committed nursing staff and a culture of punctuality, affection and duty.
